How Comfortable Are Dental Implant Procedures?

Dr. Raz routinely extracts, wisdom teeth and impacted teeth and places dental implants. Patients tell us that having teeth extracted is the harder procedure to have compared to getting dental implants placed, although many people would expect the opposite. With today’s technology and a lot of finesse both of these procedures are surprisingly easy to sit through and to heal comfortably after treatment.

When teeth are removed they are often infected, the bone is infected, the tooth is cracked or the patient is in pain. When this happens they are losing a body part and the surgery may seem scary. Patients are typically delighted with how little pain they experience, in spite of coming in with pain, fear, uncertainty about “will they take care of me?” and “will it be worth it?”. This comfort level is because we take the time so patients can explain their desired wants, needs, concerns, fears and the results they expect before examining their mouth. A thorough examination and written treatment plan is necessary before placing dental implants, including Cone Beam Cat Scans, IF NECESSARY. Dr Raz has extensive experience in planning dental implant surgery.

When you have an implant, you are gaining back a lost body part, the time spent in planning puts you more at ease, helps you plan financially, the infection has been dealt with and you feel more “at choice” about the treatment. The area is more comfortably treated since the source of pain or infection is gone.

Most bone regeneration procedures are just as comfortable as the implant procedures. Soft tissue regeneration can cause mild to moderate post operative pain which is typically handled well with ibuprofen or Tylenol and occasionally narcotic pain relievers are needed. We also use a surgical stent  (like a band aid) with Aloe Vera or Neosporin to help patients be more comfortable.

Much like the cost of dental implant treatment, these minor discomforts are soon forgotten. Certainly the long term advantages of dental implants are enjoyed with years of predictability. Patients are happy to recommend this care and more readily will have further implant treatment as needed.
